VI-B. Downloading Files (Part II)

  1. Step by Step instructions for downloading AdAware, a free tool from the C|Net download site

    1. Click on this link to go to the C|Net download site
    2. Read about the program: what it does, what is it's cost, how large it is, how many people have downloaded it, etc.
    3. Click the "Download Now" button
    4. The Windows "File Download" dialog box appears. You are given a choice of "Open" or "Save"

      1. Choosing "Open" will cause the file to download and install itself automatically. The advantage of this is that the installation process is simplified, the disadvantage is that you will not have a copy of the file on your hard drive in case you want to give it to a friend or need to install it again (say, on a new computer).
      2. Choosing "Save will cause the file to download and be saved on your hard drive so that you can subsequently install it as often as you need to
      3. We'll choose "Save" (and I recommend that you always choose this option)

    5. The Windows "Save As" diaglog box appears. Choose the folder and/or subfolder into which you want to save the file (you may wish to create a folder called something like "Downloads&squot; for this purpose), give the file a new name if you wish, and click on the "Save" button
    6. A progress box appears giving you information on the save process. When the download is complete, you can click on the "Close" button

  2. Step by Step instructions for installing AdAware

    1. Using My Computer or Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder and/or subfolder in which you saved the downloaded file
    2. Perform a virus check on the file
    3. If the downloaded file is a "zipped" file, run the necessary unzipping software (see Section 4-e in the previous lesson)
    4. If the downloaded file is an "exe" file (as is the case with AdAware), double click on the file name
    5. Answer the questions about agreeing with the legal conditions and choose a location for the installed files (usually simply accepting the suggested default location is a good idea)
    6. Continue to follow the instructions on the screen until you are notified that the installation is complete
    7. Run the program and have fun!
