If your computer has a CD Reader/Writer drive (CD-R/W), learn how back up your critical data, create colorful CD and
Jewel box labels, turn audio CDs, LPs, and tapes into MP3 CDs , create a CD photo album or self-playing slide show CD
to share with family and friends, create video CDs (play on most DVD players)
Create video postcards to share with
friends via email or the web, using the Roxio Easy CD Creator software.
Recommended prerequisites :
Introduction to Windows 98/XP
The Internet, or equivalent experience
Day 1 - Copying Data files to a CD
CD Writer Technology - What do those numbers means?
Example: Plextor Plexwriter PX-W1210TA – 12X/10X/32X
12X Write on CD-R media
10X ReWrite on High Speed CD-RW media
32X Read from CD-R media
1X = 150KB/s
Using a single CD-R/W drive versus CD-R and CD-R/W drives
External CD-R drives (Parallel, USB and firewire interfaces)
Two drives (CD/DVD Player & CD/DVD Writer) is best arrangement
Oversizing – 700MB data/80minutes audio (some can do734MB/83 minutes)
Warning - Drive and software dependent

Disk Technology
What is the difference between a CD, CD-R, and a CD-R/W?
CD-R74 650MB
CD-R80 700MB older drives may not read these
CD-R Disc Construction: layers (4 minimum) starting with top layer
1. Printable surface
2. Reflective layer (silver or gold)
Silver - best for compatibility with older drives with weak lasers
Gold – best for archiving; more stable over time (less interaction with dye layer)
3. Die Layer (green or blue) – where data is written
4. Transparent Plastic Protective Layer
How do CD, CD-R, and CD-RW work - http://computer.howstuffworks.com/cd-burner.htm
6X, 24X, 32X, 40X - Match speed to at least top speed of recorder
using slower-rated media in a higher-rated drives can cause problems.

Are some CD-R disks better than others?
http://www.asia.cnet.com/reviews/hardware/desktops/0,39001729,39036379,00.htm
http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/cd_quality.shtml
Certified discs best (Fuji, Kodak, Maxell, Mitsui, Taiyo Yuden, TDK, Verbatim)
House brands may not have consistent quality
UV light, temperature and humidity.cause poor quality CDs to age (data dropouts)
Recommendations – critical data backup – use only certified discs
Non-critical data (e.g. games) – get bargain discs
Caring for CDs
Best kept in case when not in use - Paper sleeves second best
Print surface more easily damaged than data surface
Scratches and gouges can damage the disk drive
Keep away from UV or direct sunlight – can damage dye layer
Finger prints and dirt can block the laser light
Damage to print and reflective layers cannot be repaired
Scratch on protective layer can often be buffed out or filled.
Cleaning CDs – wiping abrades surface; use lint-free cloth (wadded tissue works well).
Move in a straight line from the hub to the outside, rather than circular motions.
DO NOT clean with alcohol or tap water
CD-RWs & Direct CD
Easy CD Writer Direct CD must be running
Must first Format CD-R/W disks
Advantage
- Use Windows Explorer and drag files to the CD as if it were a disk drive
Limitations
– Disks deteriorate with age – do not use to archive data or music
- Disks are much more expensive than CD-Rs
- Better to reformat rather than delete individual files.

Tips for recording CDs
- Put your documents on one CD, and other files (e.g. e-mail archives) on another CD.
- Quit other applications, as burning is processor-intensive, particularly when you write at fast speeds.
- To get faster and more reliable burns:
- Reboot your PC before your CD-burning session
- Make sure all but your essential apps are closed
- Leave your antivirus protection loaded, but exit RealPlayer
2
- If you have a slow computer with less than 128MB of memory, you may also want to burn at a slower
speed (e.g. 1X or 4X) --especially if you're copying directly from a disc in a CD-ROM drive. It will take longer,
but the slower speed makes it less likely that you'll ruin a disk.
- If you are giving CDs to others then limit data to 650MB as some CD readers cannot read more data.

Practice Session 1 – Burning A Data CD With Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5
1. Start Easy CD Creator. Move your mouse pointer over Make a Data CD and select Data CD Project .
2. Insert a blank CD-R disk into the CD-RW drive. Choose your source drive in Select source files , and in the
top pane select the files and folders that you want to copy to the disk. Click the Add button or drag the files and
folders into the lower pane. You can see how much room you have left on the disc by looking above the aqua
bar at the bottom of the lower pane.
3. Click Record .
4. In the Record CD Setup window that pops up, make sure your CD-RW drive is selected. Pick your recording
speed. (If you are planning to work in any other apps while the recording is being done, choose a low recording
speed.)

drives. If you wish to add more files to the CD at a later date, select "Finalize Session, Don't Finalize CD"
instead of “Finalize CD.” This makes the CD readable and allows future additions of data to the CD
7. Click Copy to hard drive first . Creating an image of your data like this is a good idea if you want to make
multiple copies. (It is the safest way to go if you have an older drive that lacks buffer-underrun protection to
prevent burning coasters. If you have a newer drive, keep the Buffer Underrun Prevention box checked.)
8 . Click Start recording .
9. When Easy CD Creator is finished burning the CD, it will prompt you to create a label. Click Close , then
click OK to close the other Record CD Progress dialog box .

Day 2 – Creating Music CDs
Review of Day 1 activities
Audio File Formats
CD Audio – recording industry file format – uncompressed – best sound fidelity.
WAV – standard Windows audio file format – uncompressed – used for sound editing.
WMA – Windows Media Audio compresses sound 24:1 with no significant effect on fidelity
MP3 – compresses sound files by 12:1 with no significant effect on fidelity – very popular
MID – MIDI - Musical Digital Instrument Interface – synthesizer music
Sound Blaster or Turtle Beach sound cards include a synthesizer
Files can be copied like other data files
Need synthesizer software(e.g. Cakewalk) to create files.
Which CDs to use for recorded music?
CD-R – Finalized CDs can be played in standard home, car, or portable CD players.
CD-RW – Can only be played on CD-RW drives.
Using Easy CD Creator to Create Audio CDs
Roxio Soundstream program – copy files to folder or to CD.
Roxio Spin Doctor – edit music to remove hiss, pops, and clicks
Roxio Music Project - organize an audio CD
Roxio MP3 Project - organize an MP3 CD
Recording from Radio, Tape & Records
Connect an analog source to a sound card installed in your PC. Use an audio cable with RCA to mini-
jack connectors. Plug the output from your stereo into the input jack on your sound card. Refer to the sound
card manufacturer's guide to make sure that it is properly installed and configured. Do not connect your
turntable directly to our sound card. The output signal of turntables is very low and needs to be amplified by the
phono preamp in your stereo receiver before going to the PC’s sound card.
Use SoundStream to copy sound to a file.

Copyrights - Audio Home Recording Act ( AHRA-1992)
- Selling copies of copyrighted music is illegal.
- You can make copies of music you own for your own personal use.
- Record companies can employ methods to limit/prevent copying of copyrighted music.
- Law imposes a 3% tax on sale of blank tape/CDs and an additional 2% tax on DAT/Minidiscs
The money is distributed to music writers, record companies, publishers, etc.
You have already paid to copy your music for your own use whether you do it of not!

players will not work with CDs holding more than 74minutes of music.
10. It is a good practice, at this point, to do a Save As . This way if something goes wrong you do not have to
start all over again.
11. Place the destination CD in the drive and click the record button to open the Record CD Setup window.
12.Click the Options button

Addendum
Burning CDs in Windows XP
Windows XP includes basic software for creating data and music CDs.
Creating a data CD
You can drag and drop selected files to the CD drive’s icon or right-click on the files to open a context menu
and select “Send To” and “CD Drive” as the destination. The files will be copied to a “work space” folder on
your hard disk. To burn the files to a CD-R right click on the CD drive icon and select “Write files to CD” or
open a window on the drive and select “Write Files to CD” in the Folder action seen in the bar on the left of the
windows. The files will be written to the CD and the disk will be ejected.
CD Writer Settings
To change the CD writer settings right-click on the CD-Drive icon and select “Properties.” A “Recording” page
will open with a check box to “Enable Recording to this drive.” A box will let you specify the speed of the
drive. You will also find a pane where you can specify the folder used as work space for writing to the CD.
Creating a Music CD
MP3 and WMA music files may be written to a CD using the Windows Media Player. The files will be
automatically converted to an audio CD format.
CD R/Ws
Windows XP cannot create CD R/Ws. However, it can read CD R/Ws created on some CD writer drives.
